Haifa port continues to maintain the lead in shipping and handling containers in Israel.
The quantity of containers is measured worldwide by a term called TEU - which is, in fact, the standard size of a twenty foot container, whereas a 40 foot container is referred to 2 TEU's.
Including the containers which were unloaded a moment before the new year was ushered in, a new record of no less than 1,377,162 TEU containers was set.
This is an 11.5% increase in comparison to 2011.
The previous record was set in 2010, and was for 1,263,552 TEU.
The Haifa Port's outputs have recently been in an upward momentum, and in the past months a dramatic growth has been noted in the rate of unloading the containers, achieving results that place Haifa in the first place in Israel, by a wide margin from the competitors, and The Haifa Port neck to neck with the leading terminals in the word - with the cranes handling an averaging of between 27 -28 containers an hour.
With all these successes, it should be noted that The Haifa Port is still far from reaching the full potential embodied in the Carmel Terminal, the most advanced terminal in Israel and among the most advanced in the Mediterranean.
